Esclarmonde was one of a select few seedlings that were saved by René Cayeux, son of Ferdinand Cayeux, while World War II was taking place.

Esclarmonde is the title of an opera from the late Romantic period by French composer Julian Massenet. Esclarmonde is notorious for being one of the most difficult operas for the lead singer to perform, therefore it has not seen many productions since the 1970s with vocalist virtuoso Joan Sutherland.
